It’s A New Year and Bed Bugs Are Still Here

by Fred Speer | 02/06/2018

Bed BugThe calendar on your desk is new but the emails and texts might as well be from 2014. The resident in unit 716 says he has a bed bug problem in his condo, the business traveler on the concierge floor claims she saw a bed bug on her mattress, and the marketing manager thinks there are bed bugs in the office cubicles.

Complaints like these are

all too common for commercial property, hotel and human resource managers. The presence of bed bugs in commercial accounts is not only an inconvenience and nuisance for residents, guests and employees but it is bad for business.

A University of Kentucky study surveyed frequent business and leisure travelers to determine their preferences when choosing a hotel and how bed bugs influence their decisions.

The study revealed that on average a single report of a bed bug lowers the value of a room by $38 for business travelers and $23 for leisure travelers, respectively. The study also showed that the monetary value for travelers’ concerns about bed bugs make it one of the most important considerations when selecting or grading a hotel.

In addition to the economic losses from unoccupied units or sleeping rooms, bed bugs are a hot litigation issue. A quick Google search will turn up stories on six-figure court settlements to hotel guests and tenants

who experienced bed bug issues.

To assist commercial property and hospitality managers develop pro-active bed bug management strategies, Clark Pest Control is sponsoring the Sixth Annual Bed Bug Educational Tour.

The three city tour will feature presentations from Clark’s Darren Van Steenwyk on selecting the best bed bug treatment for your facility, and an overview of the current bed bug legal landscape.
