This week we celebrate Valentine’s Day. But the love that comes with that day shouldn’t extend to pests that want to gain access to your home.

What are these winter invaders, and what can you do to lessen the chance that they will try to come inside?

Commonly encountered pests like mice and cockroaches are outside dwellers. But much like humans, they and other pests do not like cold weather. They would prefer to be inside when winter rains and cooler temperatures roll in.

Although there are many suspects to choose from, rodents are one of the top pests that plague homeowners this time of year.

Rats and mice can fit into holes the size of a quarter and dime, respectively. They can cause significant damage to a home, including the threat of starting a fire due to their dangerous habit of gnawing on electrical wiring inside wall voids or in attics

Rodents also can damage the insulation in your attic or crawlspace if they gain access and establish a nest. Having a family of mice sleeping, eating, and defecating in the ceiling right above your bed is not a pleasant thought!

Here is Clark’s list and some helpful tips to prevent common winter pests from coming indoors:

• Rodents are said to invade 21 million homes in the U.S. each winter, bringing with them bacteria and pathogens that can spread to your family. These pests can even gnaw on the structure of your home and on electrical wires. To keep rodents out, seal all cracks and holes leading into the house.
  
  
• Cockroaches are filthy insects that can survive in almost any type of weather. Preventing problems with cockroaches starts with practicing proper sanitation. Keep homes, especially kitchens and pantries, free of food debris. Seal food in plastic containers and remember to store pet food and bird food securely – these two foodstuffs are favorites of rodents and cockroaches.
  
  
• Squirrels and raccoons and other nuisance wildlife often invade homes through attics or chimneys in search of a place to nest. Screen any open vents or chimneys to prevent these pests from getting inside.
  
  
• Spiders can also be more noticeable this time of year as they make their way inside. Although most species of spiders are harmless to humans, brown and black widow spiders can pack a dangerous and venomous bite. Eliminating clutter and wearing gloves when unpacking boxes or stored items will help lessen the threat.
  
  

In addition to sealing openings in the foundation and around windows and doors, you can also help protect your home this winter. To do this, eliminate moisture buildup from leaky faucets or pipes in dark areas of the home such as attics, basements, and under appliances and sinks.
