It’s true – people are grossed out by pests

Jan 7, 2022, 14:04 PM by Fred Speer

What’s your reaction when you see a pest in your home? Are you frightened? Does it annoy you? Do you want to step on it? Those are all completely normal reactions. Who enjoys seeing a mouse or cockroach strolling through the kitchen?

A recent article in Pest Management Professional magazine shared research that explored common reactions to pests. The nationwide survey asked respondents their reactions to seeing pests in their homes and how they handled the encounters.

Clark, your friendly pest control, grounds care, and termite expert, is used to seeing pests every day. However, we know that our customers in California and northern Nevada are not used to seeing pests. And while we find pests fascinating to study and learn more about, we understand that you don’t want them in your home, threatening your food, family, and property.

First pest impressions count

When asked what their first reaction to seeing a cockroach, mouse, or spider in their home, consumers listed the following:

  • 22 percent felt gross or grossed out
  • 17 percent search for something (e.g., a fly swatter, a newspaper or magazine, a broom, a shoe) to use to kill the pest
  • 14 percent ran away from the pest
  • 13 percent were either frightened or felt slightly annoyed
  • 12 percent screamed

In a surprising twist (at least not to Clark and the Clark Pest Control team), four percent of respondents noted that their first reaction to seeing a pest is delight. If you want to join the Clark team, check out our career opportunities.
