Renew your lawn this fall

Sep 30, 2022, 09:29 AM by Fred Speer

Fall is the time to restore your lawn, plants, and trees and help them recover from the intense stresses left behind by summer heat and dry conditions. Lawns take a beating during the summer and fall opens a window for you to deliver some much need TLC.

Now is the time for you to be proactive. Take care of your lawn and yard, and consider adding lawn care and weed control services to your Clark Pest Control service program.

More than bugs and rodents

What does Clark, your friendly pest control expert, know about protecting your lawn, plants, and trees from harmful diseases and insects? Doesn’t Clark Pest Control only focus on cockroaches and rodents? Think again. T.

Clark Pest Control can help you maintain the healthy lawn, shrubs, and trees that add both environmental and aesthetic value to your home.

In California, no two lawns are exactly alike. They can differ by turf species, soil type, climate, location, how they are used, and how they are maintained. The good news is that Clark can tailor a program with the specifics of your lawn and yard in mind.

A combination of fall fertilization, watering, and broadleaf weed control will help your lawn establish deeper roots over the cooler months. Doing this will promote thicker, healthier turf come spring. It’s also a good time to overseed thin or damaged areas of your lawn, as fall is prime growing season.

Clark’s fall lawn care recommendations also include the application of a post-emergent herbicide, to control broadleaf weeds, and fertilizer to promote growth. In your flower beds, a pre-emergent herbicide will be applied to prevent weeds from germinating over the winter.

Build a defensible space

Fall is also the right time to create a defensible space around your home. Doing this can protect it during next year’s fire season. Defensible space is the bulwark between your home and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland area that surround it. This space is needed to slow or stop the spread of wildfire, and it can protect your home from catching fire – either from direct-flame contact or radiant heat.

Fall lawn care checklist

What easy do-it-yourself maintenance tips can you take heading into fall to help keep your lawn looking good and healthy? Clark recommends the following:

Remove debris and leaves: Debris and leaves are not good for your lawn, as they block the light and trap moisture. Make sure to pick up any falling leaves and yard debris, because if you don’t, the grass under that decaying mat will die.

Proper mowing: Keep mowing your lawn – at least once a week in the fall and winter – and remember to not cut it too short. We recommend a 2 ½- to 3-inch height. Cutting your lawn too short will curtail the root system and block its ability to recover over the winter. Regular mowing also gets rid of leaves, chopping them up and leaving behind a soil-enhancing mulch.

Smart watering practices: Even though it’s cooler outside and winter rains are on the horizon, keep watering your lawn and plants at least once a week to help promote growth. Check your irrigation pipes and sprinkler heads to make sure they are working properly, and adjust as needed.

Overseeding: A dense, healthy lawn is the best protection against weeds, and overseeding thin or damaged areas can help build up your lawn. Remember that simply spreading seed on the ground isn’t the answer. The seed must be in contact with the soil and must be watered until it germinates

Clark Pest Control lets you combine any lawn and yard services – like lawn fertilization, weed control, or tree and shrub fertilization – with your pest control and/or termite prevention programs to establish a comprehensive service umbrella.
