Spider, Black widow
Physical Characteristics
The adult female is about 1/2 including an almost spherical abdomen about 1/4-3/8 in diameter with overall length including legs of about 1 1/2-1 3/8. Females are black in color with identifiable marking of a red hourglass. Males are traditionally brown and 1/2 the size as the female.
Behavior
The Black widow name comes from a popular belief that the female eats her partner after mating. This belief rarely happens in nature.
Females can be found in irregular webs and hang upside down or inverted in sheltered places with very little to no light and typically works at night. Outside the Black widow prefers protected places such as; under stones and pieces of wood, firewood piles, under decking, hollow tree stumps, trees and rodent burrows. A favorite place is in barns, outhouses, henhouses, sheds, meter boxes, bricks, barrels and woodpiles.
The Black widows venom is a neurotoxin and enters its victim through its fangs, the bite may not be felt, although pain is almost immediate and reaches its maximum in 1-3 hours. Major symptoms of a bite are; increased body temperature and blood pressure, sweating and nausea. Antivenoms are available, call your physician immediately or go to an emergency room.
Treatment
Part of the Clark Pest-Away treatment is not only providing a residual barrier for the control of insects and spiders, but to physically sweep down all accessible spider webs. This helps control in 3 ways:
1. It removes the harborage of the spider.
2. It forces the new spider to contact the residual barrier in order to get to the home.
3. The technician will kill any visible spiders in the process of removing the actual web.
