Rodent Control

Rats and mice head indoors when the nights cool off. You usually hear them in the attic or the walls before you ever see one. Droppings under the sink, chewed food packaging, and a musty smell in the garage are the other giveaways. Traps alone do not solve it. Spiders

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs travel in luggage and used furniture. A backpack that spent a night in the wrong hotel room does it too. The first sign is usually small dark spots along a mattress seam or behind the headboard, not the bugs themselves. This is not a do-it-yourself pest. Mosquitoes

Standing water is the whole story with mosquitoes. A saucer under a plant pot is enough to start a batch. Long Central Valley summers stretch the season out, and irrigation, pools that are sitting idle, and clogged gutters keep it going. Snails and Slugs

Argentine ants are the most common ant in this area by a wide margin. Carpenter ants, odorous house ants, and pavement ants turn up too. Crazy Ants: How to Identify and Get Rid of Them

Crazy ants get their name from how they move. Most ants march in a tidy line. Crazy ants dart around in fast, jerky, seemingly random directions, which makes them easy to spot even before you look closely. The name covers several species in the Paratrechina and Nylanderia genera. Two come up most often in the United States: the longhorn crazy ant (Paratrechina longicornis), also called the black crazy ant, and the tawny crazy ant (Nylanderia fulva).

How to Identify a Crazy Ant

Size: small, roughly 2.3 to 3 mm long, with all workers the same size
Color: dark brown to nearly black, sometimes with a faint bluish sheen in good light
Antennae and legs: unusually long for the body. This is the giveaway.
Movement: fast and erratic, not a straight trail
Defense: no stinger. They can bite and spray formic acid, but they are not dangerous to people or pets.

Are Crazy Ants Found in California?

Sometimes, but not the way they are in Texas or Florida. Longhorn crazy ants show up in California mainly indoors, in heated buildings, warehouses, and goods shipped in from warmer regions. They are a tropical species and do not survive Central Valley winters outdoors. Tawny crazy ants, the ones that swarm electrical equipment across the Gulf Coast, are not established in California.

Worth knowing: most ants people call crazy ants around Fresno turn out to be Argentine ants. They are the most common ant in California, and when they scatter after a spray they can look just as erratic. Correct identification changes the treatment, which is why a technician confirms the species before anyone treats anything.

Why Store-Bought Sprays Make Ant Problems Worse

Crazy ant colonies have many queens, not one. They also nest away from where they forage, often outdoors under mulch, leaf litter, or objects on the ground, then travel long distances to reach food inside. Spraying the ants you can see kills workers and does nothing to the queens. Worse, most over-the-counter sprays are repellents, so they push the colony to split into new satellite nests. That is why the problem comes back bigger a few weeks later. Argentine ants react the same way, which is one more reason identification matters.

If you have already sprayed, that is fine. Just stop before your appointment, and wipe visible trails with soapy water to erase the scent line.
