Did you know flies can transfer up to 100 types of bacteria? Think about that the next time you see guests at your restaurant wave away a fly while enjoying dinner on your patio or you spot a fly near your loading dock door.

This thought should send a shiver down to spine of any restaurant or food processing plant manager and reaffirm that the fly is clearly public health enemy number one.

Flies cause food safety issues and at the Clark Pest Control and RK Pest Management IPM for Food Plants seminar learned that the fly threat can come from above and below.

Dr. Stuart Mitchel of PestWest told attendees that more than 80 percent of Phorid flies gain access to a facility through sewers, drains and pipes beneath a structure.

“Flies will find a breach in pipes under a building and gain access through drains and broken floor surfaces,” says Mitchel. “There are hidden pest dangers beneath every facility that need to be inspected regularly for damage or signs of pest activity.”

Mitchell said an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to fly management includes the following steps:

  1. Inspection and investigation
  2. Proper identification of the fly specie
  3. Establish threshold levels
  4. Identify two or more control measures - cultural or behavioral, physical, mechanical, biological or bio-rational and/or chemical.
  5. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the corrective actions taken
