Springtails
Physical Characteristics
The adult Springtails are about 1/32 1/8, body is elongated, wingless and color is usually whitish or gray, sometimes purple, blue, green, yellow or orange.
Behavior
The Springtail get their name from the fact that most of the Springtail species have a spring structure that allows them to jump; a 3/16 long Springtail can jump 3-4.
Springtails inhabit only moist or damp areas because they rapidly lose water through their cuticles. Inside Springtails will often invade buildings when their habitat becomes dry, gaining access through door thresholds, window screens and around utility pipes. Indoors they are found in high moisture areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, damp crawlspaces, basements and damp wall. They often invade moldy bedding, mattresses, couches and stuffed chairs. Outdoors, typically Springtails can be found in leaf litter, debris, firewood, logs, decaying railroad ties and landscape timbers.
The Springtails primary diet consists of decaying vegetation, bacteria, pollen, alge lichens, anthropod feces and carrion.
Treatment
Springtails can be controlled by drying up their environment. Correcting moisture conditions and reducing outside mulch will help. Most infestations of springtails can be controlled with Clark's Year Round Pest Control and reduced watering schedules.
