Dampwood Termite
Physical Characteristics
The Dampwood termite swarmer is up to 3/4 1 long including wings. The swarmer is light to dark brown in color with a yellow to reddish ting with dark brown wings.
The Dampwood termite soldier is up to 3/8 or 5/8-3/4 with mandibles, the number of teeth on the mandibles are an uneven amount.
Behavior
As their name implies, dampwood termites locate their colonies in damp, decaying wood, typically found in old trees, stumps and logs and known for attacking utility polls, pilings and fence posts.
Although the Dampwood termite is attracted to decaying wood, they will often move to sound wood as long as the connection to high moisture is maintained. From these places the Dampwood termite will move on to structures, especially where wood is in contact with the ground or where leaky pipes are found.
Signs of Infestation
Dampwood termites eat across the natural grain, eating both spring and summer wood. The Drywood termite will make chambers connected by tunnels whose walls are smooth as if finely sanded. When conditions are dry, the Dampwood termite will accumulate at the bottom of each chamber with their own fecal pellets to seal it off.
Treatment
Soil treatment with long residual insecticides to provide a chemical barrier is the most commonly used control or prevention method for dampwood termites.
